What Northwestern Marketing Concepts Actually Does, Minus the Corporate Speak

Off

People ask what Northwestern Marketing Concepts does, and most company descriptions are written to sound impressive rather than to be understood. Here’s ours written the other way around: a direct marketing and sales company explained in plain language.

The Short Version

Northwestern Marketing Concepts is a direct marketing firm hired by telecom and fiber providers to acquire customers in person. Our account representatives meet with people at the leads our clients supply, explain the service, and sign up those who want it. Clients pay us for the customers we bring in, and everyone here is a W2 employee.

That’s the whole thing. The rest of this page is detail.

Who Hires Us and Why

Our clients are national telecom and fiber providers. They have advertising budgets we couldn’t imagine, and they still hire an outsourced sales and marketing firm, which surprises people until you look at what advertising can’t do.

An ad reaches a lot of people with one message. It can’t sit with a specific household, look at what they’re currently paying, and answer the question that’s actually stopping them. That conversation has to happen in person, and staffing it internally in every market at once is expensive and slow. So they contract it out to a telecom customer acquisition partner who already has trained people on the ground.

What the Work Actually Looks Like

Here’s an ordinary day, since nobody ever describes this part.

Zoom meeting from 10:00 to 11:30, Monday through Friday. Then face-to-face customer interactions at the leads our clients provide, running until about 7:00. On Saturdays, there’s a Zoom meeting from 9:00 to 10:00 and customer interactions until 3:00.

That’s a real schedule with real hours in it, and it isn’t for everyone. We’d rather you know that now than find out in week two. The work is conversational; it happens in person, and you’re on your feet for most of it.

The leads come from the client. We don’t pick addresses at random or work from a purchased list.

How We Make Money

Client contracts and completed customer sales. That’s it.

We don’t make money from hiring people. There’s no buy-in, no starter kit, no inventory, and no cost to you at any point in the process. Our account representatives, leadership, assistant management, and management roles are all W2 positions on a defined pay structure.

If you’ve read about direct sales company structures that work the other way, this isn’t that. Our revenue depends entirely on customers signing up for a service they want, which means the people who do well here are the ones who are good at that conversation.

Marketing or Sales?

Fair question, given the name. The honest answer is both, with the emphasis on the second.

Face-to-face customer acquisition isn’t agency work. Nobody here is building campaigns or running ad spend. We represent our clients’ brands directly to customers, which is marketing in the original sense of the word and selling in the practical one.

Since 2009

Northwestern Marketing Concepts has been doing this since 2009, headquartered in Boise, Idaho, with operations in Salt Lake City and other markets. That’s long enough that the model isn’t experimental and long enough for the people running our offices to have started as account representatives themselves.

If you want to know more about how direct marketing firms work, or whether this one is a fit for you, ask us directly. We’ll answer the same way we did here.
